Breakup With a Narcissist: Living with, loving, and leaving a narcissist. How to survive it all! | The Bastard System - Why Women Love Bastards | Breaking Up Advice For Men | Hello, Casanova
Serena is an intelligent, independent, attractive, and compassionate young woman in her late 20s. She was once distracted from the confusion of relationships by throwing herself into her work. She quit graduate school and found herself lost. Her relationship history is as follows: Prior to working in undergrad she dated Mark, a gorgeous, compassionate, generous, and intelligent man returning for his second bachelors. The time they spent together was liberating - releasing pent up frustrations of student life. They were close friends that grew into a valued relationship to this day. Six months into the relationship, Serena broke it off citing they distracted each other from studying and both would fail out if they stayed together. Then, there was Brad. It was instant. The attraction was stifling. Serena fell so fast and so far, just short of love. The catch was Brad was leaving in six months for Argentina to pursue his masters - fully paid for through a scholarship. Serena glorified his accomplishments and was crushed when he left. No invitation to have her follow was extended. She longed to 4 years relationship less hoping he would return to pick up where things left off. David was a fling. He was here a week on vacation. Serena went with the flow. He was a lawyer, young and fun. Quick and memorable.
Now, Serena is dating Nicholas. For the past year, the pattern is he works, they argue, they get back together for a few days to a week, then break up. The same issues and the same arguments, he says that there are opportunities in his life that are once in a lifetime and he doesn't want the commitment. Serena requires more attention and time than he can give. He states, "he cares for her more than a friend and has never had to leave a relationship while he still has feelings". Serena at first tries to salvage the relationship which occasionally works temporarily until the next project comes. Then, she is left, once again, to argue by herself. He always returns to her within a month. Sometimes, on the terms of casual dating, other times with the promise of a future together, permanence. However, she hasn't met any of his friends or family. She tries to be understanding, but how long can this relationship limbo last?
